He stared at her, his gaze caressing her skin like the soft kiss of a summer breeze. She suddenly wanted to step into his embrace, shield him from all the pain he had known. He smiled again, this time with a faint, sensual humor.
"It’s always there between us, isn’t it?" he whispered as he lightly stroked his fingertip along her lips.
She knew what he was talking about...the desire, fast and smoky, that skyrocketed through her. With her gaze trapped by his, she could barely remain standing, her knees weakening as his finger trailed down her throat, and along the scooped neckline of her dress.
Helpless to stop him, not even wanting to stop him, she watched as he bent closer. Instinctively, she offered her mouth, and he took it. She took a deep breath and stepped back. "No, I don’t deny I feel something, but I don’t want anything between us. I can’t... I won’t involve myself with anyone right now. All my energy has to go to making this place pay. For Audrey’s sake. If you stay, there can’t be any more of...of..." Unable to continued, she gestured toward him.
